The Chair
1. Why set up a Chair in Media and Entertainment ?
Today, the media sector is seen as an industry in its own right and the tremendous economic and technical change that it has been subject to over recent years has brought with it new challenges for the sector to face:
- competition, globalization, concentration;
- technical innovation and the emergence of new media;
- new business models.
It is a rapidly-expanding sector undergoing considerable transformation. It brings together players driven by different cultures: financiers to handle the ever-increasing financing requirements; creators of content, who are often builders of a prototype economy; States defending their cultural policies and national influence; technical infrastructure operators who will play a decisive role over the coming years. The clash between these different business approaches means that dedicated reflection on the sector has become a vital requirement.
The existence of the Chair also responds to the sector’s growing demand for professionalisation, sector in radical transformation.
2. Objectives
The Media & Entertainment Chair is a research and teaching chair established from a partnership between ESSEC and Société Générale. It brings together ESSECprofessors and sector professionals, whose combined skills form a bridge between the world of research and management education and the media and cultural sectors.
The Chair is organized around a research and teaching program with an internationally-oriented approach. Its objectives are to:
- develop monitoring and observation activities;
- develop research for analyzing sector fundamentals, reflecting on problematic areas and anticipating trends;
- train high-potential future managers in the sector specificities and the businesses it encompasses.
The Media & Entertainment Chair is intended for ESSEC MBA students
wishing to pursue a career in the media sector and cultural industries. It intends to open up a think tank for unconstrained, prospective reflective analysis of the issues inherent to a sector at the point of convergence between the cultural, economic and political worlds.
3. The steering committee
The steering committee, made up of Société Générale Founding Partner of the Chair, Orange, other partner, ESSEC management, and the Chair management (Serge Hayat and Marc Demange), meets twice a year to discuss the Chair’s activities. The committee is led
by its Honorary Chairman,
Vincent Grimond , who is also patron of the first intake of students.
